Gutai

The events noted are primarily related to Gutai as a group. Exhibitions of Gutai artists in Europe are listed in order to give primary sources to the reception of Gutai. The information assambled by Hirai Shoichi is current as of June 2010 and was published at the occasion of the exhibition Gutai: Painting with Time and Space exhibition, held at Museo Cantonale d’Arte, Lugano.​, 2010.

1954 

  • The Gutai Art Association is founded by Jiro Yoshihara and young Osaka and Kobe artists who admire him. The artists are Sadami Azuma, Toichiro Fujikawa, Yutaka Funai, Kei Isetani, Masatoshi Masanobu, Hiroshi Okada, Hajime Okamoto, Yoshio Sekine, Shozo Shimamoto, Shigeru Tsujimura, Tamiko Ueda, Chiyu Uemae, Tsuruko Yamazaki, Toshio Yoshida, Hideo Yoshihara, Michio Yoshihara. The group’s office is set up in Shimamoto’s house in Koshien-guchi, Nishinomiya. 

1955

  • The first issue of Gutai is published. Supervising Editor: Jiro Yoshihara; editor: Shimamoto. Printed and issued by the Gutai Art Association. The artists presented are Azuma, Funai, Fujikawa, Isetani, Masanobu, Okada, Okamoto, Sekine, Shimamoto, Tsujimura, Ueda, Uemae, Yamazaki, Toshio Yoshida, Hideo Yoshihara, Jiro Yoshihara, Michio Yoshihara. 
  • The Zero group including Akira Kanayama, Saburo Murakami, Kazuo Shiraga, and Atsuko Tanaka join Gutai. 
  • The Experimental Outdoor Exhibition of Modern Art to Challenge the Mid-summer Sun is held in Ashiya Park. Photographs of works by the following artists at the exhibition will be included in Gutai no. 3: Yoshiko Hashigami, Nichiei Horii, Kanayama, Toshiko Kinoshita, Masanobu, Sadamasa Motonaga, Murakami, Itoko Ono, Takeshi Shibata, Shimamoto, Fujiko Shiraga, Kazuo Shiraga, Yasuo Sumi, Atsuko Tanaka, Ueda, Yozo Ukita, Yamazaki, Toshio Yoshida, Jiro Yoshihara, and Michio Yoshihara. 
  • ​Gutai no. 2 is published. The 1st Gutai Art Exhibition is held at Ohara Hall in Tokyo. Photographs of works by the following artists at the exhibition are included in Gutai no. 4: Kanayama, Kinoshita, Motonaga, Murakami, Ohno, Shimamoto, Fujiko Shiraga, Kazuo Shiraga, Sumi, Atsuko Tanaka, Uemae, Ukita, Yamazaki, Toshio Yoshida, Jiro Yoshihara, and Michio Yoshihara. Gutai no. 3 is published.  

1956

  • A reporter from the American magazine Life photographs the group at work at the Yoshihara Oil Mill Nishinomiya Refinery. On this occasion, the One Day Only Outdoor Exhibition (Ruins Exhibition) is held in the ruins situated at the mouth of the Mukogawa River. Based on photographs of the event and Kazuo Shiraga’s article “Record of an Adventure (no. 4)” in Bijutsu techo (no. 288, October 1967), the following artists are thought to have participated: Kanayama, Motonaga, Murakami, Shimamoto, Kazuo Shiraga, Atsuko Tanaka, and Jiro Yoshihara. 
  • The Shinko Shimbun Independent Exhibition is held at the Shinko Shimbun Gallery in Kobe. Among the displays is a Gutai room. July Gutai no. 4 is published. The Outdoor Gutai Art Exhibition is held in Ashiya Park. Photographs of works by the following artists at the exhibition are included in Gutai no. 5: Yukiyo Hara, Michiyo Hirai, Nichiei Horii, Kanayama, Shigeki Kitani, Kyoichi Mizuguchi, Motonaga, Murakami, Yasushi Murano,Shota Obayashi, Kimiko Ohara, Ono, Noboru Sakamitsu, Shinichi Sato,Shibata, Shimamoto, Fujiko Shiraga, Kazuo Shiraga, Sumi, Atsuko Tanaka, Kosai Taniguchi, Takashi Toyoshima, Yamazaki, Nobuo Yoshida, Toshio Yoshida, Jiro Yoshihara, and Michio Yoshihara.  
  • Gutai no. 5 is published. The 2nd Gutai Art Exhibition is held at Ohara Hall in Tokyo.   • ​The Gutai Art Manifesto, written by Jiro Yoshihara, appears in the December.

1957 ​

  • Hisao Domoto, then established in Paris, introduces a Gutai issue to Michel Tapié, a French critic and Art Informel advocate, who showed himself very interested to the activity of the group. 
  • Gutai no. 6 is published The 3rd Gutai Art Exhibition is held at the Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art. According to the list of works, the following artists participated: Hara, Horii, Kanayama, Kinoshita, Nakahashi, Masanobu, Mizuguchi, Motonaga, Murakami, Ohara, Ono, Sakamitsu, Sato, Shibata, Shimamoto, Fujiko Shiraga, Kazuo Shiraga, Sumi, Atsuko Tanaka, Keizo Tanaka, Teruyuki Tsubouchi, Tsutsui, Uemae, Ukita, Toyoshima, Yamazaki, Toshio Yoshida, Jiro Yoshihara, Michio Yoshihara, and Toru Yoshimoto. 
  • The Gutai Art on the Stage event is held at Sankei Hall in Osaka and again in July at Sankei Hall in Tokyo. The following artists participated: Kanayama, Nakahashi, Motonaga, Murakami, Shimamoto, Kazuo Shiraga, Sumi, Atsuko Tanaka, Yamazaki, Toshio Yoshida, Jiro Yoshihara, and Michio Yoshihara. 
  • Gutai no. 7 is published. 
  • Toshimitsu Imai comes back in Japan after his five-year stay in France, during which he got to know a number of Parisian artists and critics. Georges Mathieu makes his first trip to Japan. 
  • Tapié visits Gutai in Osaka. The close association between Tapié and the group lasts until Gutai’s break up in 1972. A solo exhibition of work by Mathieu is organized by Gutai at the Daimaru Department Store in Osaka. Lectures of Toshimitsu Imai, Mathieu and Tapié are held at the Auditorium of the Asahi Hall in Osaka. Mathieu and Tapié visit Jiro Yoshihara’s, where they can see some works of Gutai. Gutai no. 8 is published; it features Art Informel with an article by Tapié. 
  • The 4th Gutai Art Exhibition is held at Ohara Hall in Tokyo. According to the list of works, the following artists participated: Masakiyo Iwai, Kanayama, Yoshio Kaneki, Kinoshita, Nakahashi, Masanobu, Motonaga, Murakami, Ohara, Sakamitsu, Shimamoto, Fujiko Shiraga, Kazuo Shiraga, Sumi, Atsuko Tanaka, Tsubouchi, Uemae, Ukita, Toyoshima, Yamazaki, Toshio Yoshida, Jiro Yoshihara, and Michio Yoshihara. The International Contemporary Art Exhibition of the World (Informel: Genèse d’un art autre), curated by Tapié, is held at the Bridgestone Museum of Art in Tokyo. Included in the exhibition are works by Shimamoto, Kazuo Shiraga, and Jiro Yoshihara. 
  • A joint exhibition by Sam Francis and Toshimitsu Imai is organized by Gutai at the Kintetsu Department Store in Osaka. 
  • ​The International Contemporary Art Exhibition in Osaka is organized by Gutai at the Daimaru Department Store in Osaka. Atsuko Tanaka is added to the three Gutai artists who were included in the original event in Tokyo in October.  

1958

  • The 2nd Gutai Art on the Stage event is held at Asahi Hall in Osaka. The following artists participated: Kanayama, Motonaga, Murakami, Shimamoto, Fujiko Shiraga, Kazuo Shiraga, Sumi, Atsuko Tanaka, Toshio Yoshida, Jiro Yoshihara, and Michio Yoshihara. The International Art of a New Era: Informel and Gutai exhibition is held at the Takashimaya Department Store, Osaka. Included in the event are Informel artists from Europe, the United States and Japan, selected by Tapié and Jiro Yoshihara. The exhibition also travels to Nagasaki, Hiroshima, Tokyo, and Kyoto. According to the list of works, the following Gutai artists participated: Kanayama, Kinoshita, Masanobu, Mizuguchi, Motonaga, Murakami, Nakahashi, Ohara, Sekine, Shimamoto, Fujiko Shiraga, Kazuo Shiraga, Sumi, Atsuko Tanaka, Tsubouchi, Uemae, Ukita, Yamazaki, Toshio Yoshida, Jiro Yoshihara, Michio Yoshihara. Gutai no. 9 is published, featuring “The International Art of a New Era: Informel and Gutai”. The Gutai Small Works Exhibition is staged at Ohara Hall in Tokyo (it later comes to be known as The 5th Gutai Art Exhibition). Based on photographs of the event, works by the following artists were included: Kanayama, Kinoshita, Motonaga, Murakami, Shimamoto, Fujiko Shiraga, Kazuo Shiraga, Sumi, Atsuko Tanaka, Tsubouchi, Uemae, Toyoshima, Yamazaki, Toshio Yoshida, Jiro Yoshihara, and Michio Yoshihara. 
  • ​The Gutai Group Exhibition is held at the Martha Jackson Gallery in New York (it later comes to be known as The 6th Gutai Art Exhibition). The exhibition also travels to several other places in the United States. On this occasion, Jiro Yoshihara sets off on a two-month trip to the States and Europe. Based on photographs of the event, works by the following artists were included: Kanayama, Kinoshita, Motonaga, Murakami, Ohara, Shimamoto, Fujiko Shiraga, Kazuo Shiraga, Sumi, Atsuko Tanaka, Tsubouchi, Uemae, Ukita, Yamazaki, Toshio Yoshida, Jiro Yoshihara, and Michio Yoshihara. 
  • Lectures of Tapié (about the new art world) and Jiro Yoshihara (about art in Europe and the US) are held at the Ashiya Municipal Cultural Center. 
  • ​The Pittsburgh Bicentennial International Exhibition of Contemporary Painting and Sculpture is held at Museum of Art, Carnegie Institute, Pittsburgh. Included in the exhibition is Jiro Yoshihara. 

1959

  • Gutai members Kanayama, Kazuo Shiraga, Sumi, Toshio Yoshida, and Michio Yoshihara are filmed as they work over a two-day period by the BBC. 
  • Notizie Arti Figurative no. 8 published by Galleria Notizie – Arti Figurative in Turin is entirely dedicated to Gutai. With texts by Tapié, Jiro Yoshihara and Luciano Pistoi, the owner of Galleria Notizie, and statements by the artists Masanobu, Motonaga, Murakami, Ohara, Shimamoto, Fujiko Shiraga, Kazuo Shiraga, Sumi, Tsubouchi, Yamakazi. 
  • The Arte Nuova. Esposizione Internazionale di pittura e scultura exhibition is held at Circolo degli Artisti in Palazzo Graneri, Turin. Organized by Circolo degli Artisti and Associazione Arti Figurative. Included in the exhibition are works by Kanayama, Masanobu, Motonaga, Murakami, Shimamoto, Kazuo Shiraga, Atsuko Tanaka, and Jiro Yoshihara. 
  • A group exhibition is held at Galleria Notizie – Arti Figurative in Turin (it later comes to be known as The 7th Gutai Art Exhibition). 
  • The 8th Gutai Art Exhibition is held at the Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art and Ohara Hall in Tokyo. According to the list of works, the following artists participated: Toshiro Arikata, Fumio Ban, Takashi Hamaguchi, Itsu Hirasawa, Nakahashi, Tsuyoshi Maekawa, Masanobu, Mizuguchi, Motonaga, Shuji Mukai, Murakami, Takehiro Nabekura, Ohara, Shimamoto, Fujiko Shiraga, Kazuo Shiraga, Sumi, Atsuko Tanaka, Tsubouchi, Uemae, Ukita, Yamazaki, Toshio Yoshida, Jiro Yoshihara, Michio Yoshihara, and Christo Coetzee. 
  • A joint exhibition of Italian artists Franco Garelli and Franco Assetto is organized by Gutai at the Takashimaya Department Store in Osaka. The Fifteen Japanese Contemporary Artists Recommended by Tapié exhibition is staged at Gendai Gallery in Tokyo. Included in the exhibition are works by Masanobu, Motonaga, Murakami, Shimamoto, Kazuo Shiraga, Atsuko Tanaka, Toshio Yoshida, and Jiro Yoshihara. 
  • The XI “Lissone Prize” (XI Premio Lissone internazionale per la pittura) is held at Palazzo del Centro del Mobile in Lissone, Milan. Included in the exhibition are works by Kazuo Shiraga and Jiro Yoshihara. They both obtain the Acquisition Prize. 
  • ​Métamorphismes is held at Galerie Stadler in Paris. Included in the exhibition are works by Kazuo Shiraga and Jiro Yoshihara. 

1960 ​

  • An exhibition of works by Christo Coetzee is organized by Gutai at the Takashimaya Department Store in Osaka. 
  • ​Tapié establishes the International Center of Aesthetic Research in Turin, in collaboration with Assetto and Garelli. Murakami is appointed as its Japanese representative. 
  • The International Sky Festival is organized by Gutai on the rooftop of the Takashimaya Department Store in Osaka. The international Informel exhibition consists primarily of advertising balloons. According to the list of works, the following members participated (* indicates artists who only showed original paintings in The 9th Gutai Art Exhibition): Kanayama*, Masanobu, Motonaga, Murakami, Ohara*, Shimamoto, Fujiko Shiraga*, Kazuo Shiraga, Sumi*, Atsuko Tanaka, Uemae*, Ukita*, Yamazaki, Toshio Yoshida*, Jiro Yoshihara, and Michio Yoshihara*. At the same time The 9th Gutai Art Exhibition is held on the third floor of the store. According to the list of works, the following members participated: Kanayama, Masanobu, Motonaga, Murakami, Ohara, Shimamoto, Fujiko Shiraga, Kazuo Shiraga, Sumi, Atsuko Tanaka, Tsubouchi, Uemae, Ukita, Yamazaki, Toshio Yoshida, Jiro Yoshihara, and Michio Yoshihara. 
  • Four Japanese Artists is held at the Martha Jackson Gallery, New York. Included in the exhibitions are works by Motonaga, and Jiro Yoshihara. 
  • Gutai no. 11 is published, featuring “International Sky Festival – The 9th Gutai Art Exhibition”.  

1961

  • The Continuité et Avant-garde au Japon exhibition is held at the International Center of Aesthetic Research in Turin. Included in the exhibition are works by Kanayama, Masanobu, Motonaga, Shuji Mukai, Murakami, Ohara, Ukita, Shimamoto, Fujiko Shiraga, Kazuo Shiraga, Sumi, Atsuko Tanaka, Tsubouchi, Yamazaki, Toshio Yoshida, Jiro Yoshihara, and Michio Yoshihara. 
  • The 10th Gutai Art Exhibition is held at the Takashimaya Department Store in Osaka and Tokyo. According to Gutai no. 12, the following members participated: Kanayama, Masanobu, Motonaga, Murakami, Ohara, Shimamoto, Fujiko Shiraga, Kazuo Shiraga, Sumi, Atsuko Tanaka, Tsubouchi, Uemae, Ukita, Yamazaki, Toshio Yoshida, Jiro Yoshihara, and Michio Yoshihara. An exhibition by Elaine Hamilton is organized by Gutai at Fujikawa Gallery in Osaka. 
  • Gutai no. 12 is published. 
  • Japanische Malerei der Gegenwart is held at Akademie der Künste in Berlin. Included in the exhibition is Jiro Yoshihara. The XII Lissone Prize (XII Premio Lissone internazionale per la pittura) is held at Palazzo del Centro del Mobile in Lissone, Milan. Included in the exhibition are works by Motonaga, Shuji Mukai, Kazuo Shiraga, and Jiro Yoshihara. 
  • The 1961 Pittsburgh International Exhibition of Contemporary Painting and Sculpture is held at the Museum of Art, Carnegie Institute in Pittsburgh. Included in the exhibition is Jiro Yoshihara. 
  • ​A solo exhibition by Motonaga is held at Martha Jackson Gallery in New York. 

1962

  • A solo exhibition by Kazuo Shiraga is staged at Galerie Stadler in Paris. 
  • A solo exhibition by Kazuo Shiraga is held at Galleria Notizie – Arti Figurative and at the International Center of Aesthetic Research in Turin, organized by Tapié and Carla Lonzi. 
  • The 11th Gutai Art Exhibition is held at the Takashimaya Department Store in Osaka. According to the list of works, the following members participated: Kanayama, Maekawa, Masanobu, Takesada Matsutani, Motonaga, Shuji Mukai, Murakami, Nabekura, Ohara, Shimamoto, Momoko Shimomura, Kazuo Shiraga, Sumi, Atsuko Tanaka, Tsubouchi, Uemae, Shigeru Wakayama, Yamazaki, Toshio Yoshida, Jiro Yoshihara, and Michio Yoshihara. Bluhm, Gallizio, Onishi, Shiraga, Tapies, Twombly is held at the Accademia filarmonico-letteraria in Alba, organized by Tapié and Pistoi. Included in the exhibitions are works by Kazuo Shiraga. The exhibition Structures répétitives is organized at Galerie Stadler in Paris. The exhibition included works by Shuji Mukai and Atsuko Tanaka. A solo show by Kazuo Shiraga is heldat Galleria La Tartaruga in Rome. 
  • The Strutture e Stile exhibition is held at the Galleria Civica d’Arte Moderna in Turin. Included in the exhibition are works by Motonaga, Shuji Mukai, Atsuko Tanaka, and Jiro Yoshihara. 
  • The Gutai Pinacotheca is opened in Nakanoshima, Osaka. Housed in an old plaster-walled warehouse owned by the Yoshiharas, it comes to function as the group’s headquarters. The L’Incontro di Torino – Pittori d’America, Europa e Giappone show is staged at the Palazzo della Promotrice al Valentino in Turin, organized by Lonzi, Pistoi and Alberto Ulrich. Included in the exhibition are works by Kazuo Shiraga and Jiro Yoshihara. 
  • A solo exhibition by Shimamoto is held at the Gutai Pinacotheca. This is followed by a series of solo shows by Gutai artists at the facility.  
  • A solo exhibition by Kazuo Shiraga is held at the Gutai Pinacotheca. The Don’t Worry, the Moon Won’t Fall Down: Gutai Art and Morita Modern Dance event is held at Sankei Hall in Osaka. Included in the exhibition are works by Kanayama, Maekawa, Motonaga, Shuji Mukai, Murakami, Ohara, Shimamoto, Kazuo Shiraga, Sumi, Atsuko Tanaka, Yamazaki, Toshio Yoshida, Jiro Yoshihara, and Michio Yoshihara. 
  • ​A solo show by Toshio Yoshida is held at the Gutai Pinacotheca.

  • The 12th Gutai Art Exhibition is held at the Takashimaya Department Store in Tokyo. Based on photographs of the event, works by the following artists were included: Kanayama, Maekawa, Masanobu, Matsutani, Motonaga, Shuji Mukai, Murakami, Yuko Nasaka, Ohara, Shimamoto, Kazuo Shiraga, Sumi, Atsuko Tanaka, Tsubouchi, Uemae, Ukita, Yamazaki, Toshio Yoshida, Jiro Yoshihara, and Michio Yoshihara. 
  • A solo exhibition by Atsuko Tanaka is staged at the Gutai Pinacotheca. 
  • A solo exhibition by Murakami is held at the Gutai Pinacotheca. The 13th Gutai Art Exhibition is held at the Takashimaya Department Store in Osaka.   • The Guggenheim International Award 1964 exhibition is held at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York. Included in the exhibition are works by Atsuko Tanaka and Jiro Yoshihara. 
  • The 14th Gutai Art Exhibition is held at the Takashimaya Department Store in Osaka. According to the list of works, the following artists participated: Norio Imai, Kanayama, Maekawa, Masanobu, Matsutani, Motonaga, Shuji Mukai, Murakami, Nabekura, Yuko Nasaka, Ohara, Shimamoto, Kazuo Shiraga, Sumi, Satoshi Tai, Takemoto, Atsuko Tanaka, Tsubouchi, Tadahiro Tsujita, Uemae, Ukita, Yamazaki, Toshio Yoshida, Jiro Yoshihara, and Michio Yoshihara. The Beautiful Japan Exposition: The Annual Ring of Beauty is held at Takarazuka Family Land. Included in the exhibition are works by Kazuo Shiraga, Atsuko Tanaka, and Jiro Yoshihara. 
  • The Fontana Capogrossi exhibition is organized by Gutai at the Gutai Pinacotheca. 
  • The Intuiciones y Realizaciones Formales exhibition is held at the Centro de Artes Visuales Instituto Torcuato Di Tella in Buenos Aires. Included in the exhibition are works by Shuji Mukai, Kazuo Shiraga, Atsuko Tanaka, and Jiro Yoshihara. 
  • The Contemporary Japanese Art exhibition is staged at the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, DC. Included in the show are works by Motonaga and Jiro Yoshihara. 
  • ​A solo exhibition by Yuko Nasaka is held at the Gutai Pinacotheca. 
  • The Gutai Small Works Exhibition is held at the Gutai Pinacotheca. The American painters Paul Jenkins and Alice Baber also take part in the show.  

1965

  • A commemorative exhibition celebrating Jiro Yoshihara’s sixtieth birthday is held at the Gutai Pinacotheca. 
  • Moderne Malerei aus Japan is staged at Kunsthaus in Zurich. Included in the exhibition are works by Motonaga, Kazuo Shiraga, and Atsuko Tanaka. 
  •  A solo exhibition by Masanobu is held at the Gutai Pinacotheca. 
  • The Five Gutai Artists in Kobe exhibition is held at Daiwa Gallery in Kobe, consisting of works by Maekawa, Matsutani, Shuji Mukai, Murakami, and Uemae. The NUL65 exhibition (Nul Negentienhonderd vijfenzestig) is held at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. Included in the show are works by Kanayama, Motonaga, Shimamoto, Atsuko Tanaka, Yamazaki, Jiro Yoshihara, and Michio Yoshihara. Jiro Yoshihara and Michio Yoshihara visit Holland to make an installation. The New Japanese Painting and Sculpture exhibition is held at the San Francisco Museum of Art. It also travels to several other places in the US until 1967. Included in the exhibition are works by Motonaga, Shuji Mukai, Kazuo Shiraga, Atsuko Tanaka, and Jiro Yoshihara. 
  • The 15th Gutai Art Exhibition is staged at the Gutai Pinacotheca. The last issue of Gutai (no. 14) is published, featuring “The 15th Gutai Art Exhibition” and the “NUL1965 Exhibition”. 
  • The Groupe Gutai exhibition is held at Galerie Stadler in Paris (it later comes to be known as The Gutai Art Exhibition in Paris). The exhibition also travels to Cologne and Loenersloot, The Netherlands.   • The New Art from Foreign Countries exhibition is held at the Gutai Pinacotheca. 
  • A solo exhibition by Uemae is staged at the Gutai Pinacotheca. 
  • The 1st Japan Art Festival is held at Union Carbide Building in New York. Included in the exhibition are works by Kazuo Shiraga, Takasaki, Motonaga, and Jiro Yoshihara. 
  • The NUL1966 art exhibition (Nul Negentienhonderd zesenzestig) is held at the International Gallery, Orez in The Hague. Works by all of the Gutai members are included. Murakami visits Holland as a representative of the group.
  • The Three-Person exhibition: Shuji Mukai, Matsutani, Maekawa is held at the Gutai Pinacotheca. The 2ème Salon International des Galeries Pilotes Lausanne is held at the Musée Cantonal des Beaux-Art Palais de Rumine in Lausanne. Gutai Pinacotheca is invited. Works by all of the Gutai members are included. 
  • A solo exhibition by Norio Imai is held at the Gutai Pinacotheca. The Karl Gerstner Exhibition is held at the Gutai Pinacotheca. 
  • The 17th Gutai Art Exhibition is staged at the Takashimaya Department Store in Yokohama and at the Gutai Pinacotheca. A solo exhibition by Toshio Yoshida is held at the Gutai Pinacotheca. This year Allan Kaprow publishes Assemblage, Environments & Happenings (New York: Harry N. Abrams), where he deals with Gutai, contemplating the first Japanese group activity as pioneer of the happening.  

1967

  • A solo exhibition by Tadasuki Kuwayama is held at the Gutai Pinacotheca. 
  • A solo exhibition by Tai is held at the Gutai Pinacotheca. The so-called Gutai Small Works Exhibition in Holland is held at the Rotterdam Design House. The Art of the Space Age by the Gutai Group exhibition is held in Hanshin Park in Nishinomiya. The show consists of works by Norio Imai, Imanaka, Kikunami, Senkichiro Nasaka, Sakamoto, Minoru Yoshida, Toshio Yoshida, Jiro Yoshihara, and Michio Yoshihara. 
  • Gutai is awarded the Kobe Shimbun Peace Prize (Culture Prize). The Gutai Group Osaka Japan exhibition is held at Experiment Studio Rotterdam. According to the catalogue, the following members participated: Sadaharu Horio, Norio Imai, Imanaka, Kikunami, Kitani, Matsutani, Mukai, Naohara, Senkichiro Nasaka, Yuko Nasaka, Onoda, Kazuo Shiraga, Tai, Tsubouchi, Toshio Yoshida, Minoru Yoshida, and Michio Yoshida. 
  • An exhibition of new works by Gutai is held at the Gutai Pinacotheca (it later comes to be known as The 18th Gutai Art Exhibition). A Gutai group exhibition is held at the Heide Hildebrand Gallery in Wulfengasse, Klagenfurt. Works by all of the Gutai members are included (it later comes to be known as the Gutai Art Exhibition in Austria). The Art Posters exhibition is held at the Gutai Pinacotheca. The 4th Summer Festival is organized by the Kansai Opera and Osaka Philarmonic Orchestra at Festival Hall in Osaka. Gutai is in charge of the stage design. 
  • The 5ème Biennale de Paris is held at Musée d’Art moderne de la Ville de Paris. Norio Imai is included in the exhibition. 
  • The 19th Gutai Art Exhibition is staged at the Central Museum in Tokyo and at the Gutai Pinacotheca in November.   • The 20th Gutai Art Exhibition is held at the Gutai Pinacotheca.   • A solo exhibition by Imanaka is held at the Gutai Pinacotheca. Spazi astratti. Dall’intuizione alla concettualizzazione is held at Galleria d’Arte Cortina in Milan. Included in the exhibition are works by Motonaga, Shuji Mukai, Kazuo Shiraga, Atsuko Tanaka, and Jiro Yoshihara. 
  • The 1st Hiroshima Renaissance Art Exhibition is held at the Hiroshima Prefectural Art Museum. Included in the exhibition are works by Motonaga, Onoda, Kazuo Shiraga, Takasaki, Tsubouchi, and Jiro Yoshihara.  

1970

  • The Garden on Garden exhibition, featuring art in the Expo Museum garden, is held at Japan Expo ’70 in Osaka. According to 18 Years of Gutai Art (Gutai bijustu no 18-nen, Kankoiinkai, 1976), the following artists participated: Sadaharu Horio, Norio Imai, Imanaka, Kawamura, Kikunami, Matsuda, Shuji Mukai, Senkichiro Nasaka, Yuko Nasaka, Shimamoto, Takasaki, Minoru Yoshida, Toshio Yoshida, and Michio Yoshihara. A presentation by all of the group’s members is made at the entrance to the Midorikan Pavilion. The facility closes soon after due to an urban planning project. An Exhibition of Prints by Eight Gutai Artists is held at Gallery Iteza in Kyoto and Petit Imabashi in Osaka. The exhibition consists of works by Matsutani, Motonaga, Senkichiro Nasaka, Shimamoto, Kazuo Shiraga, Toshio Yoshida, Jiro Yoshihara, and Michio Yoshihara. 
  • The Gutai Art Festival: A Drama of Human Beings and Objects is held at Festival Plaza in Japan Expo ’70, Osaka. 
  • The 5th Japan Art Festival is staged at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York. Included in the exhibition are works by Imanaka and Kanno. Imanaka wins the Prize.

1971

  • The 1st Fine Arts Festival is held at the Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Modern Art. Included in the exhibition are works by Hyogo-based Gutai artists. Aspetti dell’Informale. Mostra storica Internazionale is held at the Pinacoteca Provinciale in Bari. Included in the exhibition are works by Motonaga, Kazuo Shiraga, and Jiro Yoshihara. 
  • An opening exhibition is held to inaugurate the new Gutai Mini Pinacotheca in Nakanoshima, Osaka. The 3rd Hiroshima Renaissance Art Exhibition is held at the Hiroshima Prefectural Art Museum. Included in the exhibition are works by Norio Imai, Kikunami, Masanobu, Senkichiro Nasaka, Yamazaki, Uemae, Jiro Yoshihara, and Michio Yoshihara. 
  • A solo exhibition by Kanno is held at the Gutai Mini Pinacotheca. 
  • The Gutai Small Works Exhibition is staged at the Gutai Mini Pinacotheca. This becomes the last Gutai exhibition while the group is still active. 

1972

  • Jiro Yoshihara collapses at home and is admitted to the hospital.
  • Without recovering consciousness, Jiro Yoshihara dies. The 2nd Fine Arts Festival is held at the Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Modern Art. Included in the exhibition are works by Hyogo-based Gutai artists.
  • The Gutai Art Association is dissolved at the end of the month.
