From Nul to Zero, Henk Peeters
Henk Peeters (°1925, The Hague) was considered one of the most active members of the Dutch NUL movement. Together with other Dutch artists such as Jan Schoonhoven, Armando and Jan Henderikse, he formed NUL in the 1960’s, which later joined the international movement ZERO. As a result of growing international contacts, Peeters initiated ‘Zero on Sea’, an art manifestation in the summer of 1965 on a pier in Scheveningen, including about 50 likeminded artists from over ten countries.
Peeters’ work is closely inspired by daily life and natural phenomena. By using mass-produced clinical materials such as nylon and plastic and assimilating them through processes like fire, ice, snow and mist, he aims to reinitiate the viewer’s consciousness towards his environment.
The artistic practice of Henk Peeters was known for its diversity in material and technique, going from burned canvasses to readymades bought in chainstores. Often these objects show a strong duality between being both tactile and untouchable. As the artist once said: “with my work, I have always wanted it to look just as fresh as if it was in the HEMA (the Dutch chain store). It must not be artified... I had no need for artistic cotton wool.”

THE ARTIST AS CURATOR
collaborative initiatives in the international zero movement 1957-1967 Published by the ZERO foundation, Düsseldorf Between the late 1950s and the mid-1960s, a new artistic movement emerged in Europe that came to be known under the name of ZERO , as artists from Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium, France, and Switzerland sought new ways to collaborate and create new platforms for their art. In a cultural landscape bereft of conventional networks and opportunities, many avantgarde artists of postwar Europe took it upon themselves to function as the managers and editors of their own exhibitions, events, and publications. From today’s perspective, one might say that within their own exhibition spaces and in the few private galleries run by like-minded owners, these artists were also active as “curators.” This book focuses on the main projects realized by artists in the context of ZERO and is the first comprehensive study on this subject. Based on extensive archival research, it presents the result of several years of collaboration by an international group of scholars put together by the ZERO foundation. The Dutch Nul Group in an International Context Elected as Best Dutch Book Design 2011! The publication nul = 0: The Dutch Nul Group in an International Context reveals the artistic principles of the Nul movement. Leading international writers reconstruct the developments and collaborations of the Dutch Nul group with its spiritual brethren: the artists of the German Zero, the French Nouveau Réalisme, Italy’s Azimut Group and the Japanese Gutai Group, as well as individual artists like Yves Klein, Yayoi Kusama and Lucio Fontana. Given the current generation of artists’ rediscovery of such elements as time and space, light and motion, the achievements of these artists are now more relevant than ever. The members of the legendary Dutch Nul Group, declared phenomena issued from reality to be art and emphasized the beauty of serenity, repetition and uniformity in their work. The Nul artists rejected the stereotypical idea of the bohemian in a paint-splattered smock and were inspired by the technological advances of the emerging consumer society. Together they worked on manifestos and publications and organized international exhibitions with like-minded artists. In the process they set the tone for a new artistic climate in the Netherlands and, with the artists of the international ZERO movement, contributed to a watershed in the visual arts that presaged conceptual art, land art and minimalist art. Authors: Colin Huizing, Antoon Melissen, Tijs Visser, Pietje Tegenbosch, Caroline de Westenholz, Renate Wiehager, Midori Yamamura, Atsuo Yamamoto Design: Lesley Moore English paperback 192 pages ISBN 978-90-5662-838-3 Preis: € 27,50 |
